Weight training is not just about looking good. There are far greater reasons for lifting weights that go well beyond the realm of outer appearances.
I would actually go as far to say that weight lifting is far superior to cardiovascular exercise for improving health.
Here is why I have this belief:
1. Decreased chance of developing a smoking addiction: Studies have shown that people who exercise as part of their routine, are less likely to smoke. This makes sense since smoking reduces the amount of exercise a person can do and can also interfere with levels of motivation.
2. Better insulin control: When you weight lift, glut 4 transporters migrate to the surface of your muscle cells. Now this is very important because this effect allows your body to do its work with lower amounts of insulin. Even better, this is one of the strongest buffers against diabetes.
3. Better eating patterns: Regular gym rats are more likely to eat healthier. Now there are a lot of explanations for this. Maybe the investment in regular exercise is a very strong motivator for eating clean to reap the most benefit from the exercise.
4. Weight loss: Hands down, weight training is the best way to increase your metabolism-the amount of calories you burn around the clock. And if you are burning more calories, you are going to lose more weight.
5. Less depression: Exercise is a powerful antidote for poor mental states. One reason for this is the secretion of catecholamines which energize the body and mind.
6. Everything gets easier: As your body gets stronger, everything you do will seem easier. And if everything you do seems easier, life will be that much sweeter!
As you can see, weight training isn\’t just for those wishing to change the physical exterior of their body. It has many other benefits that go well beyond just the physical.
And don\’t take too long to act on this information, because waiting too long will lead to procrastination.
