What is Acid Heartburn and How to Deal With It

Acid heartburn can be discomforting, but sometimes it is a symptom of acid reflux. If you know some of the top causes of acid heartburn, then you can avoid them and stop the symptoms from occurring. If you are experiencing severe symptoms, you may have a more complex medical issue, and it is a good idea to consult your doctor.

Alcohol is one of the main causes of acid heartburn. What happens is that alcohol relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and allows your stomach contents to be refluxed into your esophagus. It also works to increase the amount of stomach acid produced. It is best to drink diluted alcoholic beverages when possible, or limit your alcohol consumption altogether to one or two drinks at one sitting.

These days, it seems normal to sit down and consume massive meals. Remember, your stomach is only about the size of your fist, and if you overfill it, those contents start to back up. This will lead to intense bouts of acid heartburn.

When possible, you should avoid eating large meals at one sitting. Fast food has no real nutritional value, so that should also be avoided. The majority of fast food portions are too large for one person and they contain a massive amount of saturated fats which are not only bad for your heart, but will trigger acid heartburn.

Another large contributing factor to acid heartburn is stress. Many of us are on the go, running from place to place and we are stretched thin and over stressed. It is important to learn when to turn down things that will overfill your schedule. You also need to get plenty of sleep and exercise and learn to manage stress.

Wearing tightly fitting clothes can also contribute to acid heartburn. The clothing causes too much pressure on your stomach which can force the contents upwards. The reflux of acid into your esophagus can cause a lot of discomfort.

Are your clothes too tight? Tight clothes press on your stomach, compressing the space in your stomach area, and causing the contents of your stomach to reflux into the esophagus. Try to avoid tight fitting clothes when possible.

Being aware of your eating habits and how much you eat and drink is the best way to get a handle on your acid reflux attacks. Reduce the amount that you eat and drink and get enough sleep each and every night. Always try to maintain portion control. If you find that your attacks are occurring just as frequently, even with your vigilance, it may be time to consult your doctor.
