If you are between the ages of forty-two and fifty-six and have not had a period in a year, then you are safe to say that you are in menopause. Even there is a wide age range where menopause can take place the average age is fifty-two years old.

Many women find that they gain twenty pounds or more during menopause. Those who chalk it up to being okay as it is just a part of a change of life, it is not okay. There are many health risks associated with excessive weight gain from menopause.

There is the risk of high blood pressure, lower back pains, diabetes, and possible heart problems. Some of these issues can be life threatening so it is important to make sure that any weight issues you have are quickly taken care of. By watching what you eat and making healthy choices, you are already one step closer to a healthy lifestyle. There is more to just eating right though as you have to also make sure that you are getting the right amount of exercise in.

Walking, running, and swimming are great ways to get your body in motion if you are not used to an active lifestyle. As a little time moves on and your body adjusts to the exercise, it would be a good idea to add in some weight training. You do not have to bulk up but you will want to burn more fat and add a little lean muscle.
