Weight Gain Over 40

Do we naturally gain weight as we get older? For most people, unfortunately, the answer is yes, says Dr. Anju Mathur who runs the Angel Longevity Medical Center in Los Angeles. Here she talks about why this is the case, and what can be done to prevent it…

Metabolic rate tends to decrease as age increases, so if an individual eats the same amount of food every year, the body just makes the extra food into fat. At this rate an average person will gain about five pounds a year. That doesn’t seem like much, but over a period of ten years, it adds up to fifty pounds. It is an unfortunate fact that metabolism decreases, and the weight gain may be so slight over time that one tends to discount it. But unless one consumes less food as the years go by, the weight gain will continue.

Eat More Food, Gain More Weight

The situation medically can be complex. There’s no one simple answer. But basically the problem stems from eating the same amount of calories needed for a younger body at a time when the body is aging and slowing down metabolic rate.

Although many things can affect weight gain, there are three important factors in treating obesity in older people. One is leptin resistance. A second factor is insulin resistance. And the third factor is called sub clinical hypothyroidism.

Eventually, when the body is much older, over the age of 70, the body begins to shrivel up. Bones and skin start shrinking. All body parts start to shrink. It’s the current cycle of how bodies behave. But between the ages of 40 and 70 a body that is given too many calories while the metabolism is dwindling, will just make fat out of the extra calories. That is, unless the person does something about it.

How to Handle Weight Gain

To keep your weight at an optimal level, no matter what your age, you have to do lab testing to find out what your leptin, insulin and thyroid levels are. Then we can treat you accordingly based on what shows up. Leptin and thyroid hormones can be replaced and insulin can be adjusted. Different individuals will need different treatments.

After the tests are done, the Slim and Trim protocol is recommended to help a person lose unwanted pounds and keep weight off. This diet uses the growth hormone hCG along with a very low calorie diet. The hormone allows the body to burn up fat, and it readjusts metabolism to a faster rate. This makes weight loss safe, rapid and you won’t feel hungry.

The medical testing shows the path of treatment needed to bring a body back to a normal, more youthful weight. At Angel Longevity Medical Center in Los Angeles, we never hesitate to carry on until the patient is satisfied with his or her weight loss. Come in and see what we can do for you!
