Weight Gain Over 40

Do we naturally gain weight as we get older? For most people, unfortunately, the answer is yes, says Dr. Anju Mathur who runs the Angel Longevity Medical Center in Los Angeles. Here she talks about why this is the case, and what can be done to prevent it…

As we get older the gain in weight may be slight at first. But five pounds a year over a period of 10 years adds up to fifty pounds. Yikes! Nobody wants to put on that much weight. The reason it occurs is because the body’s metabolic rate slows down as we get older. So if a person consumes the same amount of food over the years while the metabolic rate slows down, the body turns those extra calories into fat.

Eat More Food, Gain More Weight

The problem is your metabolic weight is going down and you are putting the same amount of calories in your as you did ten years ago, and those extra calories will be stored as fat. It’s a complex issue, not a simple issue.

Although many things can affect weight gain, there are three important factors in treating obesity in older people. One is leptin resistance. A second factor is insulin resistance. And the third factor is called sub clinical hypothyroidism.

Eventually, when the body is much older, over the age of 70, the body begins to shrivel up. Bones and skin start shrinking. All body parts start to shrink. It’s the current cycle of how bodies behave. But between the ages of 40 and 70 a body that is given too many calories while the metabolism is dwindling, will just make fat out of the extra calories. That is, unless the person does something about it.

How to Handle Weight Gain

The best way to handle this unwanted weight is to have tests done in a medical laboratory. Various things can affect weight gain. Thyroid hormones could be out of kilter. Leptin levels could be too low as well as insulin. After the tests are done, a doctor can determine what course of action to take. It may involve adjusting insulin or leptin or replacing thyroid hormones. Any of these things could help to adjust body weight to an optimum level.

Additionally, we treat obesity with the Slim and Trim protocol, based on the hCG Diet. HCG is a growth hormone that regulates metabolism, and helps a body burn fat. It can speed up metabolism. Together with a very low calorie diet, safe and rapid weight loss is assured.

The medical testing shows the path of treatment needed to bring a body back to a normal, more youthful weight. At Angel Longevity Medical Center in Los Angeles, we never hesitate to carry on until the patient is satisfied with his or her weight loss. Come in and see what we can do for you!
