If you are a new mom who wants to get back into shape after just having a baby you can rest assured knowing that this is possible. The downside is that it will not necessarily be easy or happen quickly. It is even more difficult if they baby you just had is your first.

It seems that everywhere you turn, there is advice for new mothers. Like whether you should be breastfeeding and for how long; whether you should consider organic foods for the baby and which car seat offers the best protection. Often the answers are as varied as the questions themselves.

The advice isn’t any more clear when it comes to the topic of exercising. Some are passionate about not exercising for the first two months while others are okay with it providing that you don’t over exert yourself. If you do opt to begin working out, be certain to replace any fluids that your body loses by drinking lots of water and keeping yourself hydrated.

Your body continues to recover for several months after you deliver a baby. If you are younger and were not overweight initially you will find that it is easier to get back to your pre-birth weight. Whatever you circumstance however, be sure that any weight loss is gradual so that you do not jeopardize your health in any way.

Do not commit to a diet after the baby is born, just to lose weight quickly. In this post-partum period, your body will need enough food, especially if you are breastfeeding. A basic rule to remember is that some experts believe that the mother who is breastfeeding will need an additional 500 calories per day to produce milk for her baby. Any regime that interferes with this is simply not worth the risk to your baby and yourself.

Take care of yourself. I know that seems impossible, but you put out a lot of energy, so that the 20 to 30 minutes each day to recharge yourself is vital. If you do not make an effort yourself at getting that time, nobody else is going to ensure that you have it.

Make a list of things you can do in half an hour to an hour and keep it handy. Then when this time rolls around you will be ready. Your list might include reading a book, watching a show, calling a friend or taking a bath.

When you are a new mom time management is critical. It is easy to let the baby consume all of your time, but if you allow this to happen your other relationships can suffer. Find a few reliable babysitters and make sure that you do not neglect the needs of your partner. If you can successfully pull this off, everyone will be much happier in the long run.
