Most people understand and also know that the thyroid gland is very large and is located at the front portion of the neck and more precisely below a person’s Adam’s apple. In shape it resembles a butterfly and its ‘wings’ are the right as well as left lobes that are wrapped around a person’s trachea.

Normally, this gland is better known for its ability to produce chemicals that in the proper proportions will keep the body functioning properly. So, these chemicals will govern the manner in which the human body metabolizes food consumed by a person and they also govern the growth of the body.

When this particular gland starts to fall below its normal activity potential it leads to a condition known as hypothyroidism which in turn is treated by injecting certain hormone supplements. These supplements need to be consumed once every day and the best time to take them is in the morning.

When the gland in question starts malfunctioning it causes the hair follicles continue to remain in a stagnant and dormant state and when this happens further growth of fresh hair stops. And, of course when no new hair grows in place of old hair it results in falling hair.

On the other hand when the level of T4 and TSH are above normal, it causes a condition called hyperthyroidism to develop. When this happens the best treatment is to undergo surgery to remove the offending part of the gland; another solution is to insert radioactive iodine which however is more of means to test the functioning of the gland rather than treating it.

The second thing that you can do to overcome this problem is to take certain medications that can help control and even treat the hair loss problem. Of course, before trying out any medication you must ensure that its use does not result in side effects. In many instances, certain medications can actually exacerbate the hair loss problem and so must be avoided.

When a person develops hyperthyroidism the most common symptom of the condition would be weight loss and accelerated heartbeats as well as bulging of the eyes. In addition, the person will notice tremors affecting their hands and they will also sweat excessively and feel very nervous.

If you procrastinate and delay in seeking advice you risk worsening of the condition and that will make it harder to find effective treatment options later on. Though hair loss is not a serious condition, it can, if not controlled, easily turn into one and so you should not hesitate in seeking proper medical advice to help you start effective treatment as early as is possible.

Even if you are not able to find suitable dermatologists or experts in hair loss, you can still find someone suitable by getting into touch with the American Hair Loss Council.
