If you are looking to lose weight then you may well think that simply changing your eating habits and switching to a healthy diet will be enough. This may see you drop some pounds along the way – it is, after all, a key part of any weight loss program as well as being good for your health as a whole. But, did you know that regular exercise can also help you lose weight more quickly?

A lot of us who are overweight worry about this exercise element. In many cases we don’t really feel good about ourselves and our bodies and the last thing we want to do is put ourselves on display at a health club, class or gym with a load of fit and toned people. This hardly seems like a good way to make us feel better about ourselves!

To be honest this isn’t something that you really need to worry about. Most gyms, classes and health clubs spend a lot of time helping people of all shapes and sizes to lose weight and to get fitter. But, if you don’t feel ready to take this route just yet, then why not think about other types of exercise that you can take to get you started?

It’s actually a myth that you have to take formal exercise to help with your weight loss. There are, in fact, many things that you can do in your everyday life to help you learn how to take gentle exercise. Let’s look at three ways you can help yourself here right now:

#1 Walking – it does seem as if we live in our cars sometimes and have lost the use of our legs! Walking is a great way of getting easy, quick (and free!) exercise and it’s something you can do every day. Experts recommend a brisk walk here rather than a stroll. So, try walking round the block, to the store or even park a little farther away from work and make a short walk a healthy start to your day.

#2 Work – nowadays most of us will only think about taking the stairs in a fire drill or emergency. We drive to work, take a short walk to the elevator and then sit at our desks all day. Try taking the stairs every morning – this is a great aerobic exercise that has a lot of physical benefits. If you work on a high floor and find this daunting then simply get off the elevator early and walk up a few flights.

#3 Home – don’t be tempted to just view your home as a place to sit and relax. It can also be a great exercise location and nobody has to see what you are doing here! Try walking up the stairs a few times a day just for the exercise benefit. Buy a fitness video, step, exercise bike, ball or other form of equipment and use it every day.

Remember that any exercise you take here will help you lose weight. This simply involves thinking about what you do every day and trying to factor in some exercise where you can. And, when the weight starts falling off you’ll feel better about yourself and may even be able to brave the gym!
