Of all the problems facing adults today, obesity stands out as the most deadly. Obesity can be responsible for a host of life threatening diseases. It’s a well known fact that fully two thirds of adult Americans are either overweight or clinically obese.
Why are we becoming such a fat nation? Were we always so fat? Not really. In the old days, most people were thin and healthy. We can understand why when we examine the reasons.
One reason is that so many of us today are lucky enough to be able to make a living while sitting on our behinds all day long. Before, that just wasn’t possible. In the old days, you had to really work hard to earn money.
Another, likely more significant reason is that the food we eat today is completely different than the stuff people ate a hundred years ago. Food in those days was fresh, and wasn’t shipped across the country. People ate stuff that was grown in their own neighborhood.
Nowadays, anything you eat, regardless of where it comes from, is likely filled with chemicals and preservatives. If you ever take a look at some labels, you’ll likely find some words that are difficult to pronounce, let alone have any idea what they are.
The reason is so that they can transport food from far away places, and keep it on the store shelf for a longer period of time. This benefits the stores and the producers, making it easier for them to sell their products, but what about us?
They keep making more and more money, while we keep getting fatter and fatter. Do you think they really care all that much about our health? Most people don’t think so.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can choose to find and eat healthy food. You can choose to do something physical a few times a week. It might not be easy, but your life may literally depend on it.
