In 2004 Sixty Minutes featured a segment on a new weight loss supplement, Hoodia Gordonii Plus and it’s taken the world by storm. The Hoodia plant is native to South Africa and Namibia and has been used for years by the natives to suppress their appetites during long treks into the desert. This plant actually has thirteen different species in its family and Hoodia Gordonii is the one used as an appetite suppressant. Many mistakenly label it a cactus, when in fact it is a member of the succulent family. It has a thick stem, where it stores water, and grows to a meter in height.

Hoodia Gordonii Plus is a brand name, but it’s also a guarantee. This company is licensed by the Western Cape Conservation Authority of South Africa, proving that the product it supplies is one hundred percent pure South African Hoodia from the Kalahari Desert. This certification is important, but it’s also combined with two more documents, the C.I.T.E.S. Certificate and the Analytical Report. This type of documentation can give the consumer confidence in the product that is being purchased, although any certificate can be forged.

Hoodia Gordonii Plus has the ability to curb your appetite almost as soon as it’s ingested and the effect lasts all day. The way your brain usually tells that you are full is through the level of glucose. This level rises naturally as you eat and the food turns into glucose. Hoodia mimics that effect through a molecule, called P57 by scientists, which delivers that same signal to your brain. The use of Hoodia also has shown to boost your mood, as well as be a natural appetite suppressant.

There are many ongoing tests being done on Hoodia, but to this date, there are no negative side effects found from taking the supplement. That is one of the biggest drawbacks to other weight loss supplements. Many give you a wired feeling as well as raising your body temperature, sometimes for hours at a time. Others may keep you awake all night or even cause your heart to race.

When you are choosing a Hoodia supplement, be sure to find one that is certified and does not have any additives such as ephedra, ephedrine or ma huang. There are now companies that are selling Hoodia supplements derived from plants grown outside of its native environment. There is a great debate as to whether or not these plants have the same appetite suppressing ability as those grown in the desert.
