More and more teens are becoming obese. It’s a growing epidemic that burdens health care costs. More significantly, it is causing unhappiness among teens who already face the difficulty navigating the tricky path of adolescence.

Convenience meals and junk food is a major factor. Just look at the average teen’s diet: a steady stream of fries, burgers and chips.

This is why so many are on the lookout for the best free weight loss program for teens. It IS possible to lose weight without breaking the bank but do note a few things to remember when looking for that program.

With this in mind, it is important that any weight loss program should not exploit an overweight teenagers desperation or offer unrealistic goals. Instead, go for a weight loss program that takes into account the growing and changing body and mind of the teenager.

Teenagers are still developing so they should not do any drastic dieting with overly restricted calorie intake. This can negatively affect their growth and development.

Without a doubt, any free weight loss program for teens should start with the basics. A close look should be taken at what the teenager is eating on a regular basis and also, how much physical activity the teenager is involved in.

As mentioned, many teens just don’t have the healthiest lifestyles. If junk food is a big part of their regular eating then that should be the first habit to break.

Switch to a balanced diet of vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and fruit. For better all-around weight management and health, these should replace the steady stream of chips, fries and deep dish cheesy pizza.

But this does not mean goodbye to tasty, yummy food. They can indulge in their favorite fast food once in awhile. And If they crave a burger or pizza… there are healthy varieties that taste good. For instance, thin crust pizza topped with good mozzarella and veggies. Take note: moderation is also key.

Also make sure the teen’s free weight loss program involves exercise. It is essential they work their heart, lungs and muscles to lose weight – not to mention stay healthy. Generally, you need to get some cardio at least three or four times per week for at least twenty minutes at a time.

However, this should not mean that the teen who doesn’t like going to the gym or running for exercise should be forced to do them. Just look for any other activity that will get them moving.

And dont discount daily activities. Going for a vigorous walk a few times a week is already considered adequate exercise. So why not let them walk to school? Whatever the exercise taken, it should be done willingly, otherwise it may not be done regularly.

Most importantly, your teen’s weight loss program should be doable – realistic. Failing again and again can be quite demoralizing. In the end, all that effort to lose weight may just backfire.
