The Glycemic Index And You

Over the past little while, Glycemic Index rating has been mentioned a lot more. However, I’m positive there are still people that are not too sure what this is and what it can do for them and their weight. There are plenty of diets now that are based on the glycemic index ratings of foods and these seem to have a high success rate.

The glycemic index is a measurement of how quickly specific foods are manufactured into sugars once consumed.

When you eat food that are quickly changed into sugars you will feel your insulin levels rising because your body has to make more insulin in order to combat the sugar. Once the sugar resides, what happens is that insulin levels become very low again. This may make you feel hungry causing you to eat more sugary food and starting the process over again kind of like a rollar coaster ride.

Any foods that cause high insulin generation, mostly ones that are high in sugars as well, are known to have a high glycemic index rating. Candy and other types of sweets are easy to identify that they would have a high index since they contain sugar. Other foods might not be as obvious and you would be surprised on the glycemic index of some specific foods.

An example of a less obvious high food is carrots. They are certainly good for you like any other veggie but if you eat a lot of them, you will feel the same spikes and dips in insulin as a sugary food. Some fruit can also have higher glycemic index ratings, mainly due to the natural sugar found in them.

If you watch the glycemic index on the foods that you consume you will certainly be ahead of the pack for losing weight and feeling great. This means that you will be able to keep a regular level of insulin through the day. The great thing about this is that you’ll no longer feel the horrible effects of the rising and lowering of insulin levels. Lower glycemic index food is amazing at helping your weight loss.
