Over the past little while, Glycemic Index rating has been mentioned a lot more. However, I’m positive there are still people that are not too sure what this is and what it can do for them and their weight. There are plenty of diets now that are based on the glycemic index ratings of foods and these seem to have a high success rate.

The glycemic index is a measurement of how quickly specific foods are manufactured into sugars once consumed.

When you eat foods that are converted into sugars quickly, you will begin to feel your insulin levels rise because the body has to generate more insulin in order to deal with the sugars. Once the sugars are dealt with, what happens is that insulin level lowers to a very low level causing a dip. This may make you feel hungry again which causes you to eat sugary foods again and start the whole process over.

Any foods that cause this, mostly ones that are high in sugar to begin with, are known to have a higher glycemic index. Things like candy, sweets and the like are obvious that they would have a high index. Other foods are not as obvious and you would be surprised on the level of a particular food.

An example of a not so obvious one is the carrot. They are good for you and a vegetable but if you eat a lot of them, you will feel the same effects as a sugar filled food. Some fruits also have a high glycemic index level, probably due to their natural sugars.

If you watch the glycemic index ratings on the foods that you eat you will definitely be ahead of the game for losing weight and feeling better. This means that you will be able to maintain a regular level of insulin throughout the day. The good thing about this is that you will no longer feel the negative effects of rising and lowering insulin levels. Low glycemic index foods are amazing at helping you lose weight.
