The alkaline diet is thought to provide many health benefits, but in this article I want to discuss particularly about the benefits of this diet for older adults. Why would we think that the alkaline diet is particularly valuable for individuals in their golden years? Well, part of the answer has to do with the fact that kidney function diminishes with age. And because the kidneys are the organs principally responsible for eliminating the acids produced by the foods we eat, this makes older adults vulnerable to the negative effects of a low-alkaline diet.
The first negative consequence that I wish to go over is bone loss. The most common bone illness, osteoporosis happens when the body attempts to cope with surplus acid production by withdrawing alkaline minerals from the bones. This may temporarily preserve your internal environment from becoming dangerously acidic, however, at the cost of long-term bone loss. Happily, you can stop this from occurring by eating according to an a healthful alkaline diet.
Like your bones, your muscles may also be catabolized to liberate alkaline-forming minerals. Not surprisingly, then, excess acidity is associated with muscle wasting. And at least one study shows that adopting an alkaline diet might help to protect muscle tissue in older adults.
A third destructive effect of too much acid is increased probability of kidney stones. Again, scientific studies indicate that eating according to an an alkaline diet may help to prevent at least some types of kidney stones.
Together with frequent exercise and a positive attitude, a nutritious diet may help to prevent a number of the worst facets of getting older. Apparently, health issues that many individuals think of as “normal” consequences of getting older are instead produced by an unhealthy lifestyle. The good news is that if an issue is created by a bad diet, it can be resolved by a healthy alkaline diet.
