Also too broad a spectrum was the BMI (body mass index) of the individuals in the case studies, or their percentage of weight above their ideal BMI. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>As a physician, I was amazed to discover that zinc deficiency affects almost 1 in 3 persons globally. Mood swings are the most common symptoms associated with this mineral deficiency.</p>
<p>Depression, anxiety and aggressive behavior are among the most common psychological symptoms that exist in the industrialized and developing world</p>
<p>There are many reasons for these mental health conditions, but nutrition is one that is often overlooked and holds great promise. Because of the nutrient depletion of key minerals in fruits and vegetables due to industrial farming procedures and the large percentage of fast foods most people consume, correcting vitamin and mineral deficiencies is key to improving mental and physical health.</p>
<p>Earlier research studies have shown a link between serotonin deficiency, a key brain chemical in depression.</p>
<p>Japanese researchers measured the impact zinc supplementation could have on mood, 30 young women and placed them randomly into 2 different groups-to receive either multivitamins and zinc plus multivitamins for ten weeks. The study participants were given 7 milligrams of zinc.</p>
<p>The multivitamins were given to prevent other vitamin deficiencies. They provided half of the recommended dietary allowances of vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B6, B12, folic acid and niacin by the Japanese government.</p>
<p>At the end of the study, only the women taking zinc demonstrated reductions in depression and anger. Their zinc blood levels also increased significantly.</p>
<p>Interestingly, animal studies have found that only zinc deficient female animals experienced increased aggression. This new research appears to support the anger reducing impact in women proceeding zinc supplements noted the researchers, as well as the preceding research studies&#8217; findings.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our results suggest that zinc supplementation may be effective in reducing anger and depression,&#8221; the researchers noted.</p>
<p>This study was reported in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. &#8220;Although our findings are preliminary and should be interpreted with caution, they may prompt further investigations to evaluate the relationship between zinc nutrition and mood states, in women.</p>

<p>2. Track the variables: Simply eye balling or making a mental note of your progress will not do here. First, you will not have an accurate way to measure whether or not your program is working. Second, without measuring, you subject yourself to the natural human tendency to overlook progress.</p>
<p>3. Have the biggest goals possible: The more extreme your goals, the more adrenalin you will have. And this is a great way to stay motivated when things become difficult. So make sure you aim for the stars. Worst case scenario, even if you don&#8217;t reach your goal, you will have made a lot of progress.</p>
<p>4. Use a reward system: Never punish or coerce yourself into action. This may work at first, but eventually it will kill your spirit. A much better approach is to use a reward system of motivation. This has been proven to be more effective in many different areas and institutions.</p>
<p>5. Set deadlines: You have been conditioned your entire life to respond to deadlines. So why not take advantage of this conditioning to reach your goals? Even better, setting deadlines will prevent you from wasting time on useless minutiae.</p>
<p>6. Understand that you are going to fail: But you aren&#8217;t going to fail all the time, so don&#8217;t cry, please. You see, nobody can establish a perfect exercise and dieting regimen all the time. There are going to be slip ups. So embrace them and keep moving.</p>

This is mostly due to frustrations because of slow weight loss results or the lack of any results, at all! To avoid these pitfalls and frustrations, it is important to understand that the little positives you attain are actually helping you achieve your long term weight loss goals.</p>
<p>Anything worth achieving requires a proper and reasonable plan of &#8220;attack&#8221;. Weight loss is no exception to this rule.  The most successful people who achieve long term weight loss, are those who follow a specific plan and have a support network backing them up.</p>
<p>Below is a way to start your journey towards long term weight loss:<br />
The key is to plan then &#8220;act&#8221;.  Without this, you will not succeed.</p>
<p>1. Devise a plan:<br />
People sometimes get confused by plans and goals. The end result goal in your case is weight loss but the plan is the means on how you are going to use this plan to achieve your desired weight loss. While you will undoubtedly have short term goals and a long term goal, they are not your plan.  A plan would consist of, for example, eating breakfast; walking a half hour per day; not eating after 8pm; eliminating soda from your daily routine; etc.  These are plans that can help you reach your goal of weight loss.  If you&#8217;ve tried certain things before and they didn&#8217;t work because of your lack of commitment then try loosening the plan a little for something that you could easily achieve without pushing yourself too hard. If you have a plan of walking/running 1 hour a day but you think that you might give up too easily on that: shoot for 15 minutes a day &amp; once you&#8217;ve made the 15 minutes try and push yourself for 15 minutes more. You&#8217;re much better off making a plan for 15 minutes of walking a day and doing it than making a plan of walking 1 hour a day and never leaving the couch.</p>
<p>2. Execute the plan:<br />
The greatest weight loss plan in the world will do no good if you don&#8217;t follow it.  That&#8217;s where so many people fail. They want to lose the weight but aren&#8217;t willing to take any steps to actually meet their goals.  Action is the key to success. Just remember, if you do the same, you get the same. If your plan is not something you think you can commit to, then loosen up your &#8220;guidelines&#8221; to something that is feasible, given your lifestyle and current situation. </p>
<p>3. See the plan through<br />
Stay focused on your short and long term weight loss goals, and don&#8217;t give in to the temptations to quit.  There may be some minor setbacks, but use these as learning opportunities. It is not the easiest thing getting started, but habits take time to develop.<br />
You didn&#8217;t gain weight overnight, so don&#8217;t expect to lose the weight overnight.  Keep your plan up for a few weeks and you&#8217;ll be well on your way to meeting your weight loss goals. By simply creating a plan and working and staying with it, you&#8217;ll soon begin to see your desired results. Sometimes it only takes us seeing the start of results to get us really motivated to take the weight off.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, there are many individuals who desire weight loss BUT they can&#8217;t seem to come up with the right plan of attack or don&#8217;t have the support network to assist them with their journey.  I have discovered an excellent program that has such a plan and provides excellent support. It involves similar programming that is popular on &#8220;The Biggest Loser&#8221;.  In fact, this program was started by two of the &#8220;biggest losers&#8221;: Bill and Jim Germanakos, the winners of Season 4 of NBC&#8217;s hit reality show. It involves a sensible and sane approach to calorie consumption and exercise. There is a great support network and you&#8217;re never alone as you strive to complete your weight loss goals and truly begin to see a new you.</p>

<p>1. Define goals with crystal clarity: If you have amorphous goals, your behavior is more likely to be amorphous as well. The more defined your goals are, the faster you will reach them. So make sure you have very clear and defined goals so that you don&#8217;t stray from your path.</p>
<p>2. Measure your progress: You don&#8217;t have to have a complex system here. Simple waist measurements will suffice here. Just make sure you track something reliable that way you can assess whether or not your program is working and you can stay motivated.</p>
<p>3. Have an aggressive goal: Average goals lead to average effort. But if you have an extremely aggressive, yet attainable goal, you&#8217;ll experience a surge in adrenalin. And this surge will help you get through the most challenging of times.</p>
<p>4. Be very careful about whipping yourself: In other words, use something positive as a motivating tool. And never use the avoidance of something negative as a source of motivation. You see, trying to avoid the negative leads to mental and subsequent physical burnout.</p>
<p>5. Have strict deadlines: You have been conditioned by society to follow deadlines. So why not use this available conditioning to your advantage? Make sure you don&#8217;t let your goals vanish in the always distant future. Take hold in the now by setting a deadline.</p>

<p>So, without further ado, here is an action plan you can complete right now for easier fat loss:</p>
<p>1. Make a list of your top stressors: But this list shouldn&#8217;t be exhaustive. Instead, only list your top five stressors. Then, put a check mark next to the stressors that are in your sphere of influence. From here on out, you will ignore the ones without a check mark. Create a concise action plan for the check marked stressors.</p>
<p>2. Make a list of open loops: There may be some overlap with the previous list. In any case, list your top five open loops that are robbing you of the most energy and mental space. Check mark the ones you can control, ignore the rest-let them go forever.</p>
<p>3. Reduce barriers to easy fat loss: For instance, is all your gym gear in one bag right next to your door? Is your refrigerator stocked with a good supply of healthy food for rapid meal assembly? The more you can manipulate your environment for ease of fat loss, the more likely it is that you will succeed.</p>
<p>4. Go macro: Focus on macro levels of behavior change and don&#8217;t overemphasize micro levels of change. In other words, putting your energy towards general patterns of behavior change is far more useful than trying to control every single little detail of behavior.</p>
<p>5. Don&#8217;t abuse stress hormones: Stress hormones get a bad rap, but they are very useful. The main issue here, however, is that just like anything else, when taken in excess, stress hormones do more harm than good. So don&#8217;t become addicted to them as energizers.</p>
<p>Knowing what to eat and how to exercise is only part of the equation. In fact, the most important part of the equation is knowing how to change your psychology and by extension, long term behavior patterns. So take action here today!</p>
