It’s pretty well established by now that Omega 3 fatty acids are good for us. You find them mainly in fish oils. But should you be eating foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids like bread?
There’s basically 2 forms of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats, plant forms and marine forms, found particularly in fish and fish oils. It is known that the marine form, being 2 polyunsaturated fats called DHA and EPA, is better fro your health than the plant form.
So as it’s now known that these are good for you food manufacturers are starting to make foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids. But should you eat them?
Firstly lets say that there’s nothing wrong with eating foods containing Omega fats. The manufacturers generally use fish oil for the fortification process and fish oil is good for getting those healthy polyunsaturated fats DHA and EPA.
So no, there’s no reason why you should avoid foods containing Omega 3. But that isn’t the end of the answer.
You see like lots of things demand for these foods has increased, and manufacturers are seeing an opportunity. So they are charging more, often a lot more, for these fish oil fortified foods.
So you have to consider how much Omega 3s you are getting and at what price to answer the question. And generally speaking you don’t get a lot of good fats in most of the fortified foods, and you pay for the privilege.
One serving of Omega 3 rich bread will give you somewhere around 120 mg of Omega 3 fats, good for you but not as good for you as the 3000 mg of good fats you get from a serving of oily fish. And it’s probably pretty expensive bread.
And eating fish isn’t cheap either, not to forget that it’s probably got some levels of PCBs and possibly mercury too.
If you’re trying to increase your intake of good healthy fats you can do so most cost effectively by using fish oil supplements. The best supplements are totally clean, can be taken daily and work out comparatively cheap on a cost per unit of fish oils basis compared to high Omega 3 foods.
So whilst there’s no known issues from eating foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids it’s not a cost effective way to increase your intake of DHA and EPA.
But not all fish oil supplements are the same, you have to know how to compare fish oil capsules to choose the best. Find out how on my website.
