There is nothing under the sun so wonderful as a good smelling perfume. It just makes us feel romantic and desirable. We cannot leave our homes without applying some on our bodies and men have managed to catch up to woman in this area quite rapidly as well.
“Per fumum” are the Latin words and had it’s roots in the ancient world of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Taking it to it’s next level of refinement, the Romans and Persians stepped in and made the fragrances even more attainable.
Of course India was light years ahead when it came to sweet aromas coupled with exotic fragrances. They mastered this art through incense burning though which had no oil or essence base.
Europe in the 14th century, was given a whiff of scent through her Queen Elizabeth of Hungary. She was delighted with her fragrance heightened by oils and alcohol which was blended especially for her. Needles to say, due to it’s popularity it quickly spread across Europe known as Hungary Water.
The 16th century heralded the then famous perfumer Rene le Florentin. He was escorted to France from Italy by a wealthy and ambitious lady by the name of Catherine de Medici. His laboratory was apparently linked with a secret passage to his apartment. Paranoia was rife those days as the world of fragrances started it’s commercial life in the back streets of France.
Today France is regarded as the best in perfumery. They cultivate flowers on huge plots of land in Southern France where the essence of the plants are extracted and meticulously brewed and blended to produce today’s fantastic fragrances we buy in stores.
It is said that a scent can be described by the fragrance notes or the family it belongs to. When the elements of the scents and the notes are combined that’s when we get the first impression of the scent when applied.
Used also as metaphor for musical notes, a scent accord can be produced which is artfully blended in such a way that the first smell you get is the top note. This note consists of light molecules which will evaporate rapidly into the air.
After these have dissipated, you will notice a more lingering aroma which is the heart of the scent. Here you will usually make a choice whether you like it or not and is known as the middle notes.
Finally you have the base notes gradually appearing and usually only about 30 minutes after application. These notes will bring depth to a scent which you will give you a scent throughout the remainder of the day.
Make sure you store your fragrances in places where there is not a lot of light and heat. Try to purchase sealed bottles as this will help to prevent your solution to mix with dust particles. There could be some truth in storing your perfume in a refrigerator as this adds to it’s longevity.
