There is nothing under the sun so wonderful as a good smelling perfume. It just makes us feel romantic and desirable. We cannot leave our homes without applying some on our bodies and men have managed to catch up to woman in this area quite rapidly as well.
It derives from the Latin words “per fumum” which means “through smoke”. The art of making fragrances started in the ancient world of Mesopotamia and Egypt and subsequently was refined even more by the Persians and Romans.
Perfumery did of course exist in India but the majority of their fragrances were and are still incense based. In the early 14th century and partially due to the spread of Islam, Europe slowly got introduced to the making of different fragrances.
Europe in the 14th century, was given a whiff of scent through her Queen Elizabeth of Hungary. She was delighted with her fragrance heightened by oils and alcohol which was blended especially for her. Needles to say, due to it’s popularity it quickly spread across Europe known as Hungary Water.
A woman by the name of Catherine de Medici relocated her refinement from Italy to France in the 16th century. Her personal perfumer, the then famous Rene le Florentin, had his laboratory connected to his apartment by means of a secret passageway. Apparently this was to stop any pilfering of his secret formulas and such.
France then went on to become the most important center for producing fragrances and cosmetics. The south of France was used to cultivate flowers for their essence and this is today still a major industry in Europe.
It is said that a scent can be described by the fragrance notes or the family it belongs to. When the elements of the scents and the notes are combined that’s when we get the first impression of the scent when applied.
Also talked about as musical notes, an accord of scent can be manufactured in such a way that it exudes a top note which is the first burst of intense smell you will get when applying. These are made up of tiny molecules which only lasts milliseconds in the air.
After these have dissipated, you will notice a more lingering aroma which is the heart of the scent. Here you will usually make a choice whether you like it or not and is known as the middle notes.
Lastly the base notes start to surface and it usually takes about 30 minutes once applied. This is the most important note because it brings depth to a scent which will linger for many hours.
Make sure you store your fragrances in places where there is not a lot of light and heat. Try to purchase sealed bottles as this will help to prevent your solution to mix with dust particles. There could be some truth in storing your perfume in a refrigerator as this adds to it’s longevity.
