New research is constantly changing our view of nutrition. The issue here, though, is that getting access to the right interpretation of this new information can be extremely difficult.
And dietary fat is no exception here.
So here are some commonly overlooked aspects of dietary fat:
1. Certain fats cannot be produced internally: In other words, if you don’t eat a wide variety of fats, your health will go down. Mainly, polyunsaturated fats are not produced in your body. If you don’t get them from outside sources, you will be deficient.
2. It’s needed for optimal digestion of vitamins: Not only are some fats essential, but they also regulate what vitamins you can digest. In other words, if you don’t eat fat there are specific vitamins that your body will not be able to digest.
3. Fat loss decreases without it: One of the main reasons this happens is because your body needs dietary fat to produce hormones. And said hormones burn through body fat like a knife through butter. In a nutshell, you need to eat fat to burn fat.
4. It will control insulin: It accomplishes this through two mechanisms. First, it slows digestion which brings insulin down. Second, it makes your cells more permeable towards nutrients which also brings down levels of insulin.
5. It keeps you full: If you take out fat from your diet, you will have some massive hunger pangs. You see, fat causes certain chemicals to be released which increase feelings of fullness. In other words, not eating fat can become very painful.
6. The healthiest populations in the world eat a lot of it: In fact, some Mediterranean countries have upwards of 45% of their calories coming from fat. The main difference in comparison to western countries, however, is that the fat is healthy.
Getting into the specifics of optimal fat consumption can get somewhat overwhelming. Fortunately, you don’t have to take this approach. Simply make sure you get a balance of fat in your diet.
