With so many drinks on the market that are labeled as juice, why do they actually contain hardly any?
Juice seems to have many different meanings. To me, fruit juice is extracted from real fruit and is both tasty and full of nutrients. To some drinks manufacturers, it seems to mean that a bland tasting liquid can be passed of as juice if its color co-ordinates with its name! Yet still we buy them, under the assumption that as they have some fruit in them they must be healthy.
In the majority of cases, unfortunately, this just isn’t the case. The pictures and descriptions blatantly mislead you into drinking something that isn’t what you think it is.
The actual percentage of real juice in these drinks varies wildly. It’s disgusting to think that most of them have a great deal less than 50% of actual juice.
As many of us cut sugar out of our diets to try and aid our health, we are probably taking in double what we used to through these drinks. I’m serious; half of those names in the list of ingredients are sugar. Beet sugar, Corn syrup, high Fructose are all fancy ways of telling us that we are consuming way more sugar than is good for us without actually spelling it out!
A frightening fact that recently came to my attention is that due to the overload of sugar in these products, they are, nutritionally, even behind soda. So drinking soda is actually better for us than these drinks, and the irony lies in the fact that we have probably given up soda in favor of these so called healthier options!
We need to get the word out and make people aware. Awareness is improving, but at a very slow rate, so the majority is still unaware of the possible problem they could be causing ho their health by consuming these drinks. These drinks are not healthy alternatives and the sooner everybody knows that, the better!
Only pure juice extracted from the fruit is healthy for us. So ignore anything that says ‘cocktail of juices’ or ‘juicy drink’. If is doesn’t say 100% pure fruit juice on the carton then leave it on the shelf, it is one of the impostors which will do you more harm than good.
