The reason that 95% of all diets fail is pure adaptive evolution. Think back to High School and the Theory of Evolution.

\”What does the Theory of Evolution have to do with weight loss?\”

Plenty as it turns out. You see, we humans evolved over millions of years primarily as creatures of opportunity. We got our food whenever and wherever we could find it. There might be long periods of famine or hunger, followed by relatively short periods of abundance. The human metabolism evolved through these experiences to maximize our chances of survival.

\”That sounds very interesting, but what does that have to do with my diet tanking after a few weeks?\”

You see, most diets rely on limiting caloric intake in one way or another, or with changing your caloric intake in some way. The human metabolism has evolved to perceive this as a famine or a natural food limitation. To help us survive, our metabolisms automatically slow down, so we don\’t die from starvation. This leads to the notorious plateau and sluggish feeling we all experience after being on a diet. It\’s just our body\’s way of trying to keep us alive.

\”So how do we undo evolution?\”

We can\’t undo evolution, but we can consistently lose weight and keep it off through something called \”calorie shifting\”.

\”Calorie shifting? What\’s that?\”

You simply lower your caloric intake below your baseline level for a week to 10 days. It\’s been established that the average metabolism will start to slow down after 11 days, as if you were experiencing a famine.

To stop the metabolism from slowing down, you then spend the next week to 10 days raising your caloric intake ABOVE your baseline. This makes the metabolism react as if the famine were over, so it speeds up again.

Once that happens, you then go back and limit your calories again. You see how it works? You constantly \”keep your metabolism guessing\” as to what your caloric intake will be, so it never truly slows down and you never feel sluggish.

There\’s a lot more to it, of course, since there are other things you must do. For example, you can\’t just eat ANY calories. You need 4 meals a day of the right kind of calories and up to 10 glasses of water a day. I\’ll be discussing that in future articles.
