Dietary fat can be somewhat of a tricky nutrient to optimize. Have too little and you won’t secrete enough fat burning hormones. Have too much and you will gain weight because of caloric density.

And please ignore the current fad of increasing animal saturated fat intake because it’s healthy.

Thus, here is how to make sure your fat intake doesn’t limit your weight loss:

1. Understand that not all saturated fats are created equal: In fact, the saturated fats that come from plants are very healthy. So make sure you minimize animal saturated fat (meat fat, butter, etc.) and maximize plant saturated fat like palm oil.

2. Only need one gram of DHA and EPA: If you overdo it with fish oil supplementation you are at increased risk of atherosclerosis. So make sure you only have one gram of DHA and EPA. Even better, get your omega-3 fats from natural sources.

3. Opt for cold pressed oils: Even something like mayonnaise can be manufactured with heat treated oils. And heat treated oils can actually be worse than trans fats. In the end, you are much safer sticking with cold pressed olive oil.

4. Balance out mono and polyunsaturated fats: You want to aim for a fifty percent split between both here. This will maximize your health and fat burning. And try to limit intake of omega 6 fats which can be found in things like canola oil.

5. Eliminate trans fat completely: There is no safe intake level for trans fats. The best approach here is to completely eliminate them from your diet. If you don’t, your cells will change at the structural level. And once this happens, fat loss will be extremely difficult.

A diet devoid of fat is a diet destined for failure. Ironically, you have to eat fat to burn fat. This is just the way your metabolism works. So start applying this advice sooner rather than later!
