Do you doubt that food addictions exist? Well, the research clearly indicates that certain foods can cause dopamine-like changes in the brain, the same changes that drugs cause.

And having a food addiction is not healthy because being overweight is associated with so many co-morbidities.

Thus, without further ado, here are 5 tools for beating food addictions:

1. Say something: The simple act of voicing your concern can get the ball rolling so to speak. The main issue here is expressing your concern in a caring way. This will prevent and pushback and set the stage for further communication.

2. Begin doing research: Seek out professionals and resources that can help with the situation. Knowing what options there are and doing this initial legwork can get the positive momentum going. And momentum is what the addicted person really needs to start reclaiming their sense of control.

3. Don\’t cover things up: Constantly making excuses for the person in question will only validate their own internal excuses for continuing with the food addiction. In other words, you will add fuel to fire by becoming an excuse accomplice.

4. Never take the blame: You are not responsible for the persons behavior. Thus, you should never blame yourself for what is going on. If you do, you will simply reduce your sense of empowerment in dealing with the situation. And you need to be as strong as you can be when dealing with this.

5. Stay positive: The last thing you want to do is become argumentative with the person in question. This will simply motivate them to demonize you and push back no matter how right you are. Always keep a positive attitude no matter how hard it may be. And you just might notice how the positivity rubs off on the addicted individual.

Food addictions should not be taken lightly. It\’s a very serious problem that plagues many people around the world. After all, food more accessible than ever and it provides an instant boost in mood. So take action today and don\’t let your loved ones suffer!
