There are many American children diagnosed with diabetes. The most common is type 1 diabetes, commonly known as juvenile diabetes and it is caused by an autoimmune disease.
The treatment for type 1 diabetes is similar to that of type 2. Insulin must be used to get the necessary energy out of food. In recent years, there has been an increase in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes and obesity have a direct link and children are contracting the disease at an alarming rate.
There have not been many studies done on why children are now becoming obese. If I had to guess I would have to say that there are too many children staying indoors not doing very much of anything except playing on their game consoles, getting on the internet, and watching too much television. This is the stage where parents need to act quickly. If a child is overweight and makes better choices in their lifestyle, and gets more active with sports and playing outdoors, then type 2 diabetes can be avoided all together.
Some of the most common signals that your child may have diabetes are as follows:
Losing weight with no explanation
Being tired all the time
Being thirsty all the time
Having to urinate all the time
dark spots on the body
Some other symptoms to be aware of are stomach pains and headaches. It can also cause behavior changes in some children. If a child complains of stomach aches for more than a few weeks, and has any of the other symptoms mentioned in this report, a physician should test the child for juvenile diabetes.
In closing, if a child exibits any of the symptoms of diabetes, they should seek medical attention immediately. Early detection can reduce the chances of adult diabetes.
