Many people believe they can get fit at home but it is difficult maintaining motivation whereas joining a fitness club could be the best option. Finding the right one will be much simpler if you know what it is you want to get out of it. Once you have done this it will make the search easier and hopefully you will be able to join a club that you will want to stay at. Firstly, make sure your club is within a reasonable distance from either your place of work or your home; too far and you will soon get bored and not attend.

A good instructor can make or break a club because he is the motivator and that is the most important aspect for users. They will also need to be aware of any physical limitations you may have or of any special needs before the training starts. If you speak to the staff about their facilities and training programs, this will give you a good idea about the customer service level they provide. It would be nice to know if the fitness club you have joined has a dietitian or a resident physiotherapist.

Flexibility of opening hours is important as the longer it is open during the day, the less chance there is of it becoming too crowded. Some people join a fitness club to join classes; of course these are usually an extra charge so if at all possible try and have a free lesson before you commit to anything.

It may seem like a minor point but if the club doesn’t have sufficient training equipment to go around, queues are likely to form and that is when people start to leave. Although newer types of training machines are easier to use, make sure you are comfortable using them and that they are well maintained so look around for any out-of-order signs.

Many clubs have a good social calendar which is worth noting and attending to get to know a few people who are members that may be able to help you with your training in the future. Checking the cost of membership is probably the last thing you need to do but you also need to find out if they increase it regularly every year and if there are any other costs they haven’t told you about.

Before you make your final decision, check a few other fitness clubs that are local as well as there is nothing worse that finding another, better club after you have already paid the membership on another. Although all of this may sound like a great deal of effort to go to, you won’t want to do this every year, so it is important to find a club you want to stay at.
