It is extremely common for a new mum to find herself over-weight after having her baby, and one of the most popular internet searches for weight loss is in fact ‘How Do I Get Slim Again After Pregnancy?’

In contrast to the usual reasons people gain weight, pregnancy provides a whole set of issues. Putting on weight when pregnant is actually very normal and is in fact a good thing to do as it ensures that baby and mum remain healthy. Most ‘mums to be’ also develop strong cravings for certain types of foods and even if these are considered to be fattening then they should not be discouraged to meet this need. There is also a hormonal in-balance that occurs which can also send the appetite into overdrive.

The problem arises once the baby has been born and in losing those extra pounds to become nice and slim again. Clearly, life becomes more hectic for a new mum and although this increase in activity will burn off a certain amount of excess weight there are other factors involved, such as poor diet (just eating what you can) and poor routine (just eating when you can) that work against weight loss.

So what can a new mum do to try and become slim after being pregnant? There are a few simple things that will help.

We have already mentioned routing and diet, but this is key. It is very easy to just snack on unhealthy junk food or fast food that are going to be full of fat and sugar. This is a big ‘NO NO!’ Try as best you can to plan when you eat, but if you do end up snacking the try and have healthy food such as nuts, fruit and low fat crackers stocked up and close to hand.

Sugary drinks are again very bad for a slim, trim figure so try and replace these drinks with either plain water or a nice flavored water that you enjoy to drink. Don’t drink too much fresh fruit juice or smoothies because although they may be quite healthy they also pile on the pounds.

Finally you can try and find a small slot, even 15-20 minutes per day to do some light exercise such as sit up to just try and regain some tone. Toning your body again also makes you look slim again. There are other simple ways to increase exercise such as walking to the local store with baby in a buggy or maybe carrying baby in a sling occasionally.
