Carbohydrates have gotten a very bad name due to fad diets. Granted some of them are bad, some are necessary in order to maintain a healthy diet. Having a reference list of carbohydrates will help clear up any confusion and make it easier for you to make healthy choices.
A healthy diet depends on a daily intake of carbohydrates. The cells in your body depend on the metabolism of carbohydrates for use as energy. By not having any carbohydrate intake or by having to little of a carbohydrate intake you could be hurting your body. This can affect your glucose levels, body and organ functions as well as your concentration.
There are two categories of carbohydrates. They are simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates also known as simple sugars are rapidly metabolized by your body. This can affect your mood; dramatically affect your blood sugar levels and energy levels.
The second main group of carbohydrates that are known as complex carbs or starches take much longer for your body to metabolize resulting a more regular and steady flow of energy to your body. This is much better for your body in the long run.
There are two sides to simple sugars. They can be seen as either being good or bad. The bad simple sugars Processed or convenient foods are looked at as the bad type of simple sugars.
Bad simple sugars are candies, cookies, boiled sweets, soft drinks and jams. You definitely want to avoid these carbs. The good simple sugars are the all natural fruits. You are welcome and urged to eat as many of these as you want.
A bad complex carbohydrate simply does not exist. Complex carbs help you to lose weight by metabolizing much more slowly than simple sugars. This gives you a feeling of being full for a longer period of time and aids in assisting you to avoid those in between meal snacks.
The best sources for complex carbs are whole grains. Things that fall into this category are brans, barley, and cornmeal. Some other choices include wholegrain breads, any root vegetable such as potatoes, corn and peas.
Maintaining a good balanced healthy diet isn’t that hard if you keep track of what you are eating and carbs are a necessity. Make a list of the ones that you like and incorporate them into you diet. You will feel great and be healthier for it.
