If you have been running all over beautiful Georgetown and are not noticing any weight loss you may be interested in knowing what the latest studies are suggesting. If for an entire year a man, at his target heart rate, were to exercise 6 days out of 7 for 1 hour each session he would lose in that year a mere 6 and 1 half pounds.
That means that, given that equation you would need to work out a total of nearly 20 hours per week in order to lose a mere twenty pound of weight.
The biggest myth in fitness and personal training is that aerobic exercise works for fat loss. Nothing could be further from the truth. So-called fitness experts (personal trainers) will give you two reasons why you should do aerobic exercise as part of your fat-loss program:
Myth#1: More calories can be burnt with an aerobic workout. More calories than sitting on the couch I am sure, but to burn about 500 calories on an elliptical machine you would have to work out for 45 minutes.
However, if you do 30 minutes of resistance training (weight-lifting), and 15 minutes of interval training (alternating high-intensity and low-intensity exercise), you’ll burn roughly 700 calories”40% more! Whats more, your metabolism will stay elevated for 24 to 36 hours after your workout, which doesn’t happen with aerobic exercise.
Given the fast pace of life in Georgetown, the later is much better alternative. Also, you don’t need a personal trainer to supervise all of your workouts. As long as they create a detailed plan for you, then you can get great results without having to see them every day.
Myth #2: Aerobic exercise will put you in your fat burning zone. Yes, you will burn a greater percentage of calories from fat during your aerobic workout, but keep in mind that this is a larger percentage of a smaller number so its less fat overall. Also, resistance training has been repeatedly shown to increase the percentage of calories that your body burns from fat during the rest of the day, which is when we burn 80 to 90% of our calories.
You cardiovascular fitness will get more results from interval training for 15 minutes than you would from jogging around Georgetown for 45 minutes! Therefore, if a personal trainer approaches you and touts the benefits of jogging or cardio for 45 minutes a day, you should run as far away from him as possible!
Here is a great, free workout no personal trainers in site, which you can, do right here in Georgetown:
#1. Walk over to M street and locate the Exxon gas station, were going to start at the Exorcist steps.
#2. Begin by walking up and then back down the stairs once. Than jog up them but walk down them a second time, that is your warm up.
#3. Run to the top of the stairs, walk down, rest at the bottom for 1min. Repeat for 12 rounds or 15 minute, whichever comes first.
You’ve just gotten better results in less time with a great view of Georgetown.
