If you are trying to get rid of flabby arms and you want to take your knowledge to the next level, you will have to do some exercise physiology research. Although this is not necessary per se, having a more profound knowledge base helps you make better decisions about diets and programs.
The main issue here, however, is that once you start to read some dense text, you may get a little lost with all the different exercise terms. You see, as knowledge becomes more precise on a subject, the vocabulary must become more complex to describe difficult concepts.
So without further ado, here are some common exercise phrases that you may encounter in your flabby arm mission:
1. A concentric contraction. Whenever one of your muscles makes one of your bones move it shortens. There are little proteins called myosin and actin which hook onto each other and pull together. When you do a bicep curl, your bicep shortens and forms a bulge, for instance.
2. An eccentric contraction. This can be viewed as the opposite of a concentric contraction because in this case the muscle is shortening. So whenever you lower the weight during a bicep curl, for instance, you are performing an eccentric contraction.
3. A complete exercise. Every exercise has a beginning, middle and end. In order to complete an exercise through its entire range of motion, you must go through each portion. If you do not, you could develop some nasty muscle imbalances.
4. A repetition. This is the singular completion of an exercise. You can view it as one unit of exercise. Thus, one set of 12 repetitions would involve doing an exercise 12 times.
5. An exercise set. A set is simply a group of repetitions to be performed in sequence. Once you dive into some more advanced texts, you will encounter advanced terminology such as super sets. A super set is the completion of one exercise set right after another without any rest in between.
Now my personal recommendation is to broaden your knowledge on flabby arms and exercise science as much as possible within your own limits. In other words, do NOT try to learn everything in one shot. Any time you acquire a new skill or new knowledge it takes some time before you can internalize the new information.
