Fasting To Lose Weight – What You Must Know

It really sounds so simple – you can have the body of a movie star in two weeks just by fasting to lose weight.

Those extra pounds you hate will simply vanish as you quit eating food for 10 days or more and swallow only juice or water – leaving you with a hot bod Julia Roberts or Matt Damon would be proud of.

Sorry folks, fasting to lose weight – used on its own – will not give you the long-term healthy trim body you really want.

Yes, there are stories and testimonials out there about people who’ve tried water fasting to lose weight or juice fasting to lose weight – and they claim to have dropped 10, 20, 30 or more pounds. But let me emphasize, this is a short-term fix that doesn’t work long-term.

Let me emphasize that fasting for just a day or two is OK, but you should never go on an extended liquid-only fast just because you want to drop a few pounds. Fasting was never intended buy itself to be a weight loss method. Fasting to lose weight is a classic example of a “get rich quick” scheme and if it sounds too good to be true, well you know the rest.

Here’s the sad truth – if you do go on an extended liquid-only fast, you will lose weight – sometimes a lot of it in a very short time. That’s why it is so appealing. But in most cases, that weight piles back on as soon as the fast is over. Some fasters even find themselves heavier because they are so hungry after a fast they can’t stop eating! In fact, I’d like to see the long-term outcomes of some of those water and juice fasters if they don’t also change the bad habits that got them overweight in the first place!

Fasting on its own without additional diet and lifestyle changes will only lead to a temporary loss of weight, mostly from water in your tissues. An extended fast of a week or more will put your body into “starvation” mode. Your brain will slow down your metabolism to burn calories slowly. That’s exactly the opposite thing you want to happen! You need a fast-burning metabolism to burn off accumulated fat stores.

And water fasting for weight loss – for an extended period – can actually make you sick, causing headaches, dizziness and constipation. If you fast for a long time you’ll also lose muscle.

The trick with fasting is to do it right – like many cultures and religions around the world do. Indeed, fasting is a part of every culture – your doctor even insists you eat nothing for 12 hours before blood tests for cholesterol, for example. Speaking of health, drinking nothing but cooled, boiled water for 12-24 hours is a good way of curing a tummy bug (stomach flu).

Some folks even take regular short fasts to clean out their digestive systems, enjoying a “light” day or so free from meals, coffee and junk food.
