Many people in America are obese. It is easy to look down upon people who are overweight. It is one of the most picked on class of people in America. Who is to blame for obesity is the question. You may jump to the person and part of that is true. But looking at many of the underlying issues of a person’s weight gain can help us understand the ‘why’ to a person’s issues with weight.

Depression: Not wanting to do anything but eat to feel better may be a sign of depression. Something is underlying the cause of the depression but the outward effect is eating too much. There is a pleasure in eating things that taste good so you want to eat more. And if you eat too much you gain weight.

Control: When everything else is a person’s life is out of control then perhaps the one thing they can control is eating. Even if it is too much they are in control and want to have control over something. It can cause obesity. It can also cause other eating disorders as bulimia.

Learned behavior: Coming from a family that does not eat healthy and there is nothing wrong with that is a learned behavior. There is not issue of eating the wrong foods, the wrong portions and the wrong time of day is standard. No one is to blame as it is generational and no one sees that perhaps it is causing the obesity because they are a happy family.

Protection: If a person has unfortunately been sexually abused they may struggle with weight as one of their coping mechanisms. If they can control their weight by how they look unappealing in their eye to others then they feel protected from being hurt in the future.

It is easy to blame obesity on various factors but knowing the source of issues that are the core of the ‘why’ you can begin to work on those issues. If you can find these sources then it will help you why you go for certain behavioral patterns to over eat. If you have a desire to lose weight these issues may present themselves later and you can deal with them. Just don’t give up and strive for a better life and feel good about yourself.
