Canned soup is cheap, easy, and tastes pretty good, so many of us turn to it when we have had a long day. Unfortunately, if you do not have much time to cook from scratch, you might find yourself falling into a rut. Fortunately, you do not have to deal with boring food. Improving a can of soup can be remarkably easy and still work well.
All you have to do is know what to add to any can of soup to take it from dull to delicious. Check out your leftovers – do you have any veggies in the fridge? Cut up fresh veggies and microwave or saute them, or toss in cooked veggies. You will be surprised by the difference they can make in a simple can of soup
You can use frozen vegetables, as well. They require even less work than using fresh vegetables or many types of leftovers. Just pour them out of the bag and heat. There is a real difference in taste. Try corn or green beans in chowders or cream soups, for instance.
Meat can make an excellent addition to soups, as well, and it is a great way to use up leftovers. For a tasty chicken soup, save bits from a previous chicken meal, warm them briefly in the microwave, and add to your canned meal for a better taste. Any kind of meat, including seafood, can be used. If leftovers are not common in your kitchen, you can try canned meats instead. Chicken, shrimp, or other options make a canned soup a lot more interesting. Add canned crab to a standard can of clam chowder for mixed seafood chowder. Put chicken in vegetable and noodle soups. Everyone loves a great cup of soup.
Leftover grains are a wonderful addition to soup meals, as well. Leftover rice, barley, or pilafs, a handful of extra noodles, and many other grains can add a bit of interest to a boring canned soup. Precooked grains can be added right to the soup when you heat it.
Be sure not to forget about your spice cabinet or condiment shelf when you improve canned soups. Sprinkle on a little garlic or onion powder, seasoning salt, a few herbs, or some red or black pepper. Splash in a little wine or sherry, or a touch of balsamic or red wine vinegar. Hot sauce, soy sauce, and other unusual condiments also have a surprisingly good effect.
Cheese is great on top of soups, or heated in cream soups and chowders to create something new. Alternatively, try adding a spoonful of sour cream to a canned soup, after you have heated it up. The extra richness could make the meal a lot more appealing.
