With all the different kinds of rowing machines on the market it can be tough to know what your best options are. So I just want to quickly run you through some of the different ways these indoor rowers have been built so that you can find out what the best one for you is.

Magnetically Powered Rowing Equipment

In these systems – like at a bike – a flywheel mass is driven by the energy which is generated when you make a stroke. The flywheel is slowed either by the magnetic force of several permanent magnets or – in the ideal case – by an electromagnet (as with eddy current resistance). These systems are close to perfect because they allow you a very smooth rowing. You should only ensure that the flywheel mass is huge enough to guarantee gliding exercises. In the ideal case the flywheel mass is still moving when you start with the next stroke.

Many people say that this type of rower is the smoothest. Experts recommend this type if you have been experiencing any back problems because of this.

Water Rowing Equipment

There is no better way to simulate real life rowing. This unique system moves a rotating paddle inside a water filled tank. It was created by the Water-Rower company and is the greatest you can get – but unfortunately it’s also the most expensive.

You can also change the resistance level to where it suits you best by simply filling the water tank with more water.

Hydraulically Powered Rowing Equipment

This has kind of become the industry standard and is a snap. It works with pistons and is usually the type that you would find it gyms across the world.

It’s among the cheapest types and the least realistic, but it works the body very well and provides a top workout. One of the problems however is that when first using it, it might take time for both pistons to be set at the same level and so you can start working out.

Another issue is that once your going you can’t change your position or move much because you’ll be met by too much resistance from the hydraulics.

This isn’t the best option if you’re older than 40 as it can cause damage to joints, muscles and tendons.

Oxygen Powered Rowing Equipment

Using a rower which is set up to use oxygen, it is possible to get the most realistic feeling according to many users and experts.

The resistance is generated by an air drive which spins are urged by your movements. With every stroke you are in harmony with the ongoing movement of the air drive. This is exactly the effect you experience during real rowing when your boat is moving forward. This system is characterized by providing the athlete a very natural and smooth movement – rowing becomes real fun. A good choice and an absolutely sufficient machine is the Horizon Oxford Air Rower.

If you can afford it and you want one of the best workouts whilst also getting the real feeling, then this is the way to go. However, they are more pricey so if thats an issue you may want to either look for one that is second hand or else you could try one of the other systems that I have mentioned.
