Using affirmations to help you lose weight can provide a good “boost” to your weight loss program, but only if you use them in the right way. Too many people think that just saying the words will create positive changes – or worse, they use affirmations that are unfocused, weak or otherwise ineffective. No wonder they don’t get anywhere! This article is going to offer some helpful ideas and tips for writing powerful, effective weight loss affirmations.

First step: Get clear about what you are trying to accomplish with your affirmation. Obviously, losing weight is your goal. But that’s not what your affirmation needs to focus on. Why do you want to lose weight? To feel better about your body, right? That’s the essence of your goal, not the pounds lost between now and then. Having excess weight on your body probably makes you feel heavy, weighed down, fatigued, and uncomfortable. Losing that weight will probably make you feel very free, energetic, happy and confident about your body.

Those feelings are your true goal, not the numbers on the scale! Give some serious thought to how you want to feel after you have lost the weight you want to lose, and then incorporate the emotional essence of those feelings into your affirmation. So, instead of an affirmation like this: “I weigh 120 pounds” – your affirmation would be more like this: “I feel so happy, healthy, strong and slender!”

There was another clue in that last paragraph, did you see it? The power of positive emotion. To be effective, your affirmations need to trigger a sense of joy, excitement, and anticipation. Otherwise you might as well be saying a collection of nonsense words – they won’t change anything. When your emotions are activated, you generate a strong intent and direct it toward the outcome you want. That’s the true power of the law of attraction in action.

Next important step: Keep saying your weight loss affirmations over and over all day long. Saying them only once or twice a day will accomplish nothing. Instead, be relentless about it. Say them over and over while you are driving, shopping, watching television, taking a walk, meditating, or doing anything else. The more frequently you do, the faster they are going to replace any old, limiting beliefs you may have been holding.

Last but not least, say your affirmations with strong intention and power. If you just mumble them quietly they won’t carry nearly as much power as if you practically shout them (you can just say them strongly instead of loudly if you want to keep them private and there are other people around you). Just make sure to infuse them with a lot of passion and conviction. For most people, using affirmations in this way should inspire some noticeable changes within a week, maybe two. The changes may be small at first but if you keep going they should increase in intensity and frequency.
