There is a right way and a wrong way to lose weight. The right way is, off course, to lose it and keep it off. The wrong way is, as you can imagine, to not lose any at all or lose some initially, but then gain it back. And as it usually happens, when you regain weight, you gain more than you initially lost. Sounds familiar?
About 6 in 10 Americans are overweight, that’s 60% of the United States population. Many of them will go to great efforts to lose weight, but only very few really succeed. Less than 5% achieve long-term success. Obviously, something is not right here? Mainstream diets, as it seems, are not doing especially well. Why is that?
This is because the majority of mainstream diets are so called reduction diets. Everything with low in it. You know – low fat, low carb, low calorie, etc. The reason why it’s so hard or nearly impossible to achieve long term weight loss with these diets lies in a way our bodies deal with starvation. After all, these diets are starvation diets.
The main objective of our bodies is to survive and they have many clever adaptation techniques to achieve that. One of them is called starvation mode. It kicks in when you starve, like when you are on starvation diet. In this mode, your body will try to survive on as little energy as possible, also trying to more efficiently store as much energy (fat) as possible.
But it gets worse. Once you start eating normally again, the body still remains in this mode for a while. This is the reason why you gain weight faster than you ever thought possible. Soon, you end up weighing more than you did before you started dieting.
If you’re trying to achieve lasting weight loss, starvation is probably the worst thing you can do. There are much better solutions. One of them is called calorie shifting.
Calorie shifting method works by keeping your metabolism high by, as its name suggests, rotating the calorie intake. This is achieved by eating six meals a day, not starving. You can even have cheat days, when you can eat any foods you want. Because you don’t starve, it’s very easy to stick with. And it works.
