Trying to lose weight in today’s society and overall environment is almost a full time job for a lot of us. How often have we bought books about dieting and never cracked them, bought exercise machines and never opened the shipping box, and bought miracle pills and super weight loss guarantees from some huckster on the TV at 3am while chowing down on popcorn and soda. Finding diets that work is so elusive that most of us throw in the towel before we even start, because deep down inside we feel that it is an impossibility and a totally unreachable goal. Losing weight is hard; but there is hope because there are programs out there that do work and can help you lose weight and become healthier overall.
One of the main reasons people shun many weight loss plans is because of the cost. You tally up how much all those prepaid meals and shakes cost per month, and you are stunned at the amount; and if you are part of a family, or better yet the cook for the family; how can you justify buying food for the family for the month, and then spend hundreds of dollars on yourself to get prepackaged cardboard meals for you for your diet plan. Most people can’t rationalize that; but there are ways you can find diets that work without too much pain and effort. For you to stick to a plan, it must be tailored to the way you live, how much you can spend on it, and contain a nutritionally sound base of foods so you maintain your health. And your head and all the emotions and idiosyncrasies that are in it, needs to be taken into consideration as well. How you think and how you react to daily living is just as important in the planning of your diet plan as anything else. Many of the best diets that work are based on behavior modification, or changing the way you think and act.
Take a look at Weight Watchers, or the Sonoma Diet (based on Mediterranean foods and cooking with wine included) or the Glycemic Impact Diet. These are all diets that work because they are time tested and have proven track records in weight loss, and they include your feelings and emotions as well as what foods you like and how you like or dislike cooking. Some of us would rather open a package, or eat a can of soup cold out of the can, rather than have to (God forbid) pick up a pot and actually cook something; so the diets that work take than into consideration when formulating an eating plan and make up a diet with those quirks in mind.
Before you take the plunge and decide you must lose weight, get your body back in shape, and get healthy; you have to decide just what it is that you want from a diet in order to find diets that work.. Are you mainly wanting to lose weight and want to do it as quickly as possible, or are you after the long term effects of eating a nutritionally sound mix of foods with exercise added, or do you want exercise to be the main focus of your plan and the foods you eat will act as complements, not as the main idea. Are you a compulsive eater and eat when you are stressed, or happy, or anytime the sun rises. Or could you do without food altogether and just snack on heavily salted, fatty or sugary products because you can’t be bothered worrying about what the contents of foods are, just whether or not they taste good and take away your hunger. You have to take this into consideration first, and then look for the plan that will fit into the lifestyle that your head dictates as well as be good for you.
Our lives are so complex today, and so based on modern conveniences that we hardly need to exert any effort to get around and get all our daily needs taken care of; and it is because of precisely that fact, that most diets that work are thwarted by the very ways that we live. New studies in weight loss and how behavior and environmental influences affect our ability to be able to stick with a diet plan show that we are failing miserably when we stop the diet plan and try to resume our previous lifestyle. We are bombarded every waking minute with luscious food ads and pleasurable activities so much so that we just cannot exert the will power it takes to overcome the effects of all these ads on our psyches and as a result, we revert right back to what makes us feel good and here comes all the weight back.
Finding diets that work is a real challenge for most of us, this is a given; but in the meantime there are positive steps you can take to take control of the situation and really get some results. For instance, start keeping a food diary so you know when you are eating and how much and what triggers your eating if you are an emotional eater. Get that willpower pumped up and even give yourself incentives with cash rewards, or a new set of clothes when you make your goal-something along those lines, because dangling a carrot in front of your nose does get results most of the time. Go easy on yourself; no one ever accomplished anything of any importance by putting themselves down all the time. Believe in yourself and push on; you can do it, you just need to find a plan that fits the way you live and think, is nutritionally sound, has exercise included and is not a fad.
Finding diets that work is one of the hardest things that any of us with weight problems will have to undertake. It involves not only getting rid of the weight, but also changing your behavior, your attitudes about you and the way you look at life, and feeling and staying positive. You must incorporate exercise that you like into the plan, and foods you will eat that make you feel good; because if you don’t, statistics show that you will throw in that proverbial towel after just a few weeks if the diet is not a good fit. You know there is a one-of-a-kind, fabulous, super person trapped inside your body; and it is your job to go on a search for diets that work to set that wonderful person free and in so doing, change your whole life for the better.
