What are the building blocks of a healthy and nutritious diet?

by Graham Foster

Today I am going to look at the 3 building blocks of a healthy diet one that is filled with nutrition and is good for you, whether you are trying to lose weight or not. They are protein, carbohydrate (carbs if you prefer) and fat.

Protein has approximately 4 calories per gram, and can be found in food like eggs, other dairy products made from milk such as cheeses, and yoghurt. In addition protein can be found in red meats such as beef steak and fish.

Moving on to carbohydrates the story is pretty much the same in terms of calories at around 4 calories per gram. But unlike protein which occurs only naturally (unless added as a supplement) carbs can be found both naturally and also in food that is processed or if you prefer man made.

Carbohydrates which are found in nature include rice, some pulses (such as beans),potato’s in various different guises, and oatmeal but this is just the tip of the iceberg a wider range of man made carbs are found in cookies, candies, and cakes plus a whole range of other processed foods.

But you probably won’t be suprised to learn that from each gram of fat there are a massive 9 calories. That’s right a shocking 225% more calories than either carbs or protein. But few people fully understand the implications of this fact.

Nothing is ever quite as it seems as there are a number of different types of fat there are bad fats trans fatty acids and saturated fats which are generally derived from animals or manufactured by man. Where as good fats are generally from plants.

A balance of carbs, protein and fat (ideally mono and poly unsaturated fats with a small proportion of animal fats) will prevent you having problems with being overweight and obese. It is when these food groups get out of balance that serious problems occur.

If you choose to have a diet which has a high level of fat or indeed a high level of carbohydrate (especially man made carbs) you increase your chances dramatically of having problems with your weight. If you continue this way overtime you may end up extremely obese or as doctors use the term morbidly obese.

Fat is much more calorific than either proteins or carbohydrates so when planning a meal try to keep a good balance of both carbs and protein and a smaller amount of fat.

Let’s examine the different types of fat individually.

Mono unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA’s). Mono unsaturated fats are found at room temperature normally in the form of vegetable oils, nuts and seeds.

Polyunsaturated fats (Poly unsaturated fatty acids):- These are are found mainly in vegetable oils, fish and seafood. They are liquid or soft at room temperature. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are types of poly unsaturated fats and are considered essential fatty acids because our bodies cannot make them themselves, thus they must be obtained through the diet. Some times referred to as PUFA’s.

Saturated fats (Saturated fatty acids) are usually solid at room temperature and are found mainly in foods from animal sources like meat, dairy products and butter. Some vegetable oils such as coconut, palm kernel and palm oil are also full of saturated fatty acids.

Trans fatty acids:- They are sometimes known as trans fats or hydrogenated fats or partially hydrogenated fats. This means that they have been chemically altered by the addition of hydrogen to make them solid at room temperature. Trans fats are found in foods such as some margarines, used extensively in the fast food industry and in processed snacks.

Just as a quick rule of thumb but it’s by no means an exhaustive or totally fool proof system. If the fat comes from an animal such as the fats found in butter, pastry or shortening, it is saturated fat and if it comes from a plant such as olive oil, sunfower oil or nuts it is most likely unsaturated fat. Remember unsaturated fat is good fat.

Just remember when it comes to eating healthy it’s all about keeping the balance right.

Fighting Food Cravings- A Realistic Look

by Lorelei Fenton

Every day as we walk around our world we see food addiction. We hear people proclaiming that whenever they eat pasta, or home-baked bread, or chocolate cake they just can’t stop. People are even prone to laugh at themselves and tell you flat out, they are addicted to something. But perhaps, when you really look at it, food addiction is not a funny thing. Perhaps if you look closely, you might even call food addiction a debilitating disease.

‘Debilitating,’ you might say. ‘That’s a bit extreme, isn’t it?’ Well maybe not.

Let’s take a look at fighting food cravings. You are a size 14. You want to be a size 8. Now we can talk all we want about how society favors thin people, and the model for beauty is skin-and-bones. And all of this is quite true. I don’t dispute it. But the plain and simple fact is, you want to be a size 8, and you can’t get there. It’s you who wants this. It’s not anyone else. And the kick in the teeth is you know you could be there. You know your body on some level wants to be there. But you can’t stop eating all of the cookies, pasta, and bread in order to get there.

Many people with food addiction experience self-esteem problems. They think they are weak and have no will-power. They go on crash diets. They white knuckle it and become irritable and grouchy with their loved ones. Many will give up after a while, and begin to eat even more than they ever did. Most will then gain more than they ever did. Quite often these same people will become convinced that they are less capable than other people, and this greatly affects their sense of self.

This is what a low-level food addiction looks like, before it becomes full-blown. As it progresses, obesity and binge eating often set in. The binge eating causes extreme waves in blood sugar, and a feeling of exhaustion and lethargy. This feeling follows food addicts through their entire lives. Binge eating will sometimes lead to bulimia, as the ‘fight to handle’ extreme cravings rages on. And this, of course, is a perilous place to be. Either way, most food addicts’ metabolisms are destroyed and diets no longer work, and self-esteem becomes next to nil.

If you’re lucky, at this point you will just continue your cycle of irritability, obesity, and carbohydrate abuse until your body depletes its insulin supply. At this point you will become diabetic and sentence yourself to a shortened life-span, and an old age of pain and misery. If you’re not so lucky, you will convince yourself that it is better ‘not to eat at all’ than to fight the cravings, or to be fat. You will then become anorexic. If this is the case, judging by statistics, you probably won’t make it.

And this is the thing about which we joke at parties as we eat our 10th cookie.

Fighting food cravings is no laughing matter for a lot of people. But there are sources of help. There is a program called Overeaters Anonymous, which I attended for many years. There is also a program called Food Addicts Anonymous. Both of these will give you the support of other people on a similar path, as well as their experience strength and hope. You will also need a food plan that deals with food as an addictive substance. And there are many other tools I will give you in subsequent articles. But to those of you who suffer, I will just say, yes you can live a healthy happy life with food addiction. But you need to reach out.

Dieting for Weightloss

by Unnikrishnan Nedungadi

The lost weight is all gained back and even more than what was lost using a crash diet program and other methods. The reason for this is simply that people on diet does not change the eating habits when dieting. Dieters have to diet sensibly and consume 1,000-1,200 calories a day as recommended by nutrionists. When dieting one should be rather cautious not to lose muscle in stead of fat. The purpose of dieting is to lose fat and not muscle.

Losing weight

Losing weight is losing fat, water and muscle. Managing weight is geared for success in the long run and lasting for lifetime. Medications like HRT, steroids and contraception pills are very often linked to weight gains.

The risk of developing gallstones is increased by weight loss dieting. The risk of developing gallstones is likely to be increased by losing and gaining back the lostweight, also known as weight cycling.

Common weight reduction dites:

*Medically supervised diets

*Independant dieting

*Commercial dieting organizations

*Support group for weight loss programs

*Diet supported by drugs and artificial food, prepackaged foods, foods with low calorie (VLCD), balanced diet plans supported by food supplements, ‘Fad diets’, diets medically supervised, diets provided in hospitals.

Dieting

Diet affect the energy intake by limiting nutrition supply to the body. Fiber is an essential component to sustain healthy motion. In most cases diets result in fiasco gaining more weight than what was lost. This is due to the fact that our body is not designed to enagage in the constant process of losing and gaining weight. Therefore, diets cannot sustain weight loss and long-term health benefits. The temptation for food and old habits still linger.

Diets lacking in essential nutrition, fewer than recommended calories could be risky and dangerous for kids. Diets can be used to maintain the body weight and some of the athletes gain weight in the form of muscles, although dieting is considered primarily for losing weight.

Several kinds of diets are available in the market. But all weight loss diets resrticts the food intake to decrease the weight in the body. There are some athletes who follow dieting to increase the body weight, especially American football players. This give them an advantage with the heavy body over the opponents in the field.

Individuals who are underweight, such as those recovering from anorexia nervosa or starvation, may adopt weight-gain diets which, unlike those of athletes, have the goal of restoring normal levels of body fat, muscle, and stores of essential nutrients.

Dieting

Studies indicate that dieting may affect the dieter’s psychology and ushers in a childhood state. Dieting causes weight gain in some dieters, and as a result this may prove to be a failure in sustaining the lost weight.

Some of the side effects of dieting are:

* It may make you feel hungry and preoccupied with food (thinking about it all the time)

*Lacking energy and drive

*Lost and lacking motivation

*Dizzy feeling and cold

*And deprived of foods you enjoy.

Dieting before Pregnancy, many doctors do emphasize losing weight before beginning a pregnancy. Dieting (especially strongly hypo caloric diets) tend to deplete the body of vitamins and minerals, and particularly of B vitamins. It is already a stress on the body; add in nutritional depletion before taking on the stress of making another little human being inside you (and all the huge hormonal changes associated with that). Dieting after pregnancy has special implications when breastfeeding.

Dieting is a never ending process, as it creates a vicious circle of overeating and dieting. This creates problems more than it solves. Dieters will never stop dieting and will be always a prey to the dieting indusrty and its products. These dieters are doubly in risk of acquiring diabetes type-2 than the overweights who are not on any diet.

The best kept secret for an effective and sustainable weight loss is cleansing. Cleansing is the key to detoxify your liver and colon and to keep the toxins out of your system. Start with a healthy eating habit that includes plenty of nutritious food and greens. This is the best way to staying healthy with optimum weight, a good alternative to dieting and weight loss.

Wish you luck in your dieting and do not forget to eat smart and healthy.

Acai Berry Juice and its Benefits

by Mark Roberts

Acai berry products such as juice and freeze dried powder has been introduced only in the last several years. The natives of Brazil and its local population has been using this for recipes or as part of their diet in drinks and other food dishes. Most people find the flavor appealing often tasting like blueberries with a hint of chocolate some have even suggested it has a slight flavor of cinnamon.

The natives of the Amazon rain forest have been using acai berries for thousands of years as a dietary staple. These remarkable little purple berries look similar to blueberries or purple grapes and are harvested off of a palm that grows in swampy floodplains.

Acai berries have one of the highest ORAC ( Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity ) which is a measurement of antioxidant capacity of foods or supplements. Due to the benefits and its ORAC value these berries have gone up in price in a short time.

Many people may see improvements by using acai berry products or acai pills including those dealing with various illnesses. Athletic trainers know the importance of antioxidants and supplements that supply protein and lasting energy.

Some of the health properties of acai are anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and immune system. Some of the many uses and conditions that people are using these products for are, weight loss, cleansing and detoxing, high blood pressure, heart conditions, high cholesterol, inflammation, arthritis, allergies, eczema, psoriasis and other skin problems.

What makes these berries so amazing. They are loaded with protein and fiber and contain minerals such as phosphorus, iron, calcium and potassium. Also contains B1, B2, B3, C and E essential fatty acids Omega 6 and Omega 9 respectively Linoleic acid and Oleic acid which research indicates helps maintain normal cholesterol levels. When you looking to buy acai berry juice look for pure organic products. Some products claim to be acai berry juice but are actually a mix of other juices such as blueberry, mango, or pomegranate juice.

How safe is the South Beach Diet?

by Linda Miller

Anytime you are beginning a weight loss program, the first question you want to ask is, “Is this diet safe?” Crash diets and fad diets are not safe. In fact, some extreme diet practices can lead to serious health problems. When you choose to follow the South Beach Diet, you don’t have to worry about that at all. The South Beach Diet is merely a healthy eating plan that causes you to lose weight. So, if you are looking for a way to take off that extra weight and want to know if the South Beach Diet is safe and effective, explore the details of the South Beach Diet and ask a few questions.

What are the benefits of the South Beach Diet? The biggest benefit found on the South Beach Diet isn’t weight loss. It’s learning how to eat healthier. The South Beach Diet teaches you how to tell the difference between good and bad carbs, and clues you in on what fats are ok to eat and which ones aren’t. These simple facts are what make the South Beach Diet so effective.

Expert nutritionists will tell you that you should only have in limited doses those products which your body has a problem breaking down. We all know that foodstuffs such as chips and candy, both high in sugar content and saturated fats are not good for us. When you are following the South Beach Diet, Phase 1 will show you that you need to limit your sweet eating to just 75 calories each day.

The removal of fruits and grains during Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet is often another bone of contention. This is because we know and understand these foods to be healthy so we question why we should have to give them up at this stage of the diet. South Beach Diets answer to that is, yes, these things are good for us, but only in moderation.

Once the two weeks of Phase 1 is complete, you begin to add fruits and grains back into your diet, but this time in a healthy, informed and sensible way. The important thing about this phase of the South Beach Diet is that you no longer crave those high-sugar, high-fat foods. You have broken the hold they had on you, so now you are free to eat them smartly.

Some have also wondered how the South Beach Diet affects pregnant women. It is not recommended that pregnant women enter into Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. If you are pregnant and still want to follow the South Beach Diet program, skip over Phase 1 and start the diet in Phase 2.

Likewise, due to the fact that growing is still taking place and two weeks without grains and fruit can make them lethargic, teenagers are quite often discouraged from following the South Beach Diet.

If you are in any doubt as to whether the South Beach Diet will be good for you, it only takes a quick consultation with your doctor or nutritionist who will be more than happy to give you advice. Each and every one of us is different and it may be that the original South Beach Diet needs tweaking just a little to be appropriate for you.

Healthy Ways to Lose Weight Now

by Jason KM Oh

Losing weight is hard, that’s a fact. Nothing comes easy in life. But if you take a long term view to lose body fat, you will succeed and most likely lose more than what you hope. Below are 5 healthy ways to lose weight now -

1. Eat complex carbohydrates - whole grains, vegetables, beans or lentils - rather than refined carbs such as white bread or processed cereals, as they release glucose gradually. When you see a brown bread wrapper with the words multi-grain, wheat, or some other healthy description you probably automatically think, “healthy.” Yes and no. You’ll score higher in the healthy column by purchasing bread that is whole grain.

2. Enjoy food - If healthy eating and exercise is your rule, the occasional Cake is not a problem. Let me clarify that, if you make fitness your normal habit, the occasional favorite treat or desert, such as a mud cake, wedding cake or even a party cake, will not ruin your body. As long as you always come back to the original rule, and not change the rule as you go along.

3. Trim the fats - fat is very dense in energy. so even cutting out 1 tablespoon per day can help you lose nearly 2kg a year. Avoid or reduce butter, cream, copha, coconut milk and margarines. Choose trim cuts of meat and cut off all fat before cooking. Plus, cut back on takeaways, chips, biscuits and pastries. But it is OK to have a treat now and then, but in moderation.

4. New dieters often fail because they never get started with their eating plan. Continuing with the infamous, “I’ll start tomorrow”. Keep going with that philosophy and you’ll find that infamous tomorrow never comes. After all, tomorrow, is never today. Make a promise to yourself when you will start your eating plan and stick to it.

5. Remember why you are doing it and keep in mind all the benefits you will reap when you succeed. Make your weight loss program a habit that becomes something normal for you. And keep these points in mind - start cooking your healthy own meals (grilling, steaming or boiling), never ever have second helpings regardless of where you are or what the occasion is, Eat slower and chew your food for longer, and get into some kind of physical activity.

These are simple measures you can do now to makes the changes to your life. Not only there the healthy ways to lose weight, but the most effective. So don’t rush into your fat loss efforts, take the time and learn to improve your lifestyle. Making small adjustments each day, is one big step to shed more body fat.

Original Stacker Ephedra

by Todd Massey

Why can’t I get ephedra diet pills anymore, you ask? The FDA and lawsuits that sent companies into bankruptcy that manufactured ephedra products for weight loss. The old news is the FDA banned ephedra and any type of product that contains ephedra a while back and most of the companies that made products like Stacker 2 with ephedra have gone bankrupt from lawsuits.

Don’t go looking at your local convenience store or Target for ephedra products because they don’t want to risk the threat of lawsuits. Companies can’t get insurance to cover sales of ephedra diet products and simply don’t want the associated hassles despite the continued demand for ephedra.

Popular weight loss diet pills (like Diet Fuel, Xenadrine, Stacker 2, Stacker 3 and many others) once made with herbal ephedra are no longer available.

You just want to get Stacker 2 ephedra in the original bright yellow bottle. You don’t want any of these products that have never been proven to work.

More than one scientific study proved multiple times that ephedra combined with caffeine worked to burn fat. The main ingredient in herbal ephedra that performed the fat loss function was ephedrine. When used in high enough concentration over a long enough period of time the body will burn off more fat for energy than it normally does. Actual weight loss occurs because of several factors such as increasing energy expenditure and appetite suppression.

Despite the fact that ephedra diet pills of all brands meant rapid sales and massive profits, it is no longer worth the risk of a lawsuit. Also, insurance companies will not authorize the big chain stores to sell these problem ephedra products for the same reason of the threat of being sued by someone that wants to blame a company for their own incompetence.

Why can’t I get ephedra products at all, you ask? The Federal Drug Agency and multiple lawsuits. The old news is the FDA banned ephedra and any type of ephedra products a while back and most of the companies that made products like Stacker 2 with ephedra have gone bankrupt from lawsuits.

How to Shed Unwanted Fat Fast

by Anne Woodland

Whatever rapid weight loss program you are on you will find that many of the things you currently do in a week will have to change if it is to be successful. If you truly want to lose weight then you will require a determination level that you may not have previously exhibited and a desire to change all those bad habits that have created this situation. There are a number of things that can affect your weight loss; some are shown below:

* Obesity or weight problems that may run in the family * Past or present psychological issues * Desire to lose weight

Excessive weight causes many problems; some but not all are physical aspects. Whilst the number of physical and mental effects on an overweight person is great, it is amazing how these can be turned around when a person starts to lose weight. It must be said that most rapid weight loss programs will require some form of emotional support from close friends or relatives; regular exercise and a healthy nutritious diet are also going to be part of this plan. The diet plan must be flexible to your tastes other wise it will fail, put aside at least a quarter of an hour every day to carry out some form of physical activity like brisk walking, running or other type of cardiovascular exercise.

Do not worry if your weight loss plan is not producing results as quickly as you would like; everyone has a different metabolism and some will see results faster than others; this is perfectly natural so do not become despondent. In instances like these it is best to substitute a more rigorous exercise program to compensate and learn to listen to your body and adjust your diet plan accordingly. If you find a plan isn’t working as it should then perhaps you will need to change the diet plan as each person’s metabolism is different and you cannot expect every diet plan to work.

You would be wise to choose an exercise method that suits your physical abilities so if all you are able to do is walk then that is fine; this is proven to be the best exercise and as muscles burn more calories than fat it’s also best to put on a little muscle which will make you look good too. Many people who are dieting forget the importance of staying hydrated; drink plenty of water on your rapid weight loss program, at least six large glasses per day and don’t forget it also flushes out toxins from the body. Even though white meat and fish are generally good for you, they can contain more fat than is desirable so stay clear of deep fried foods in general as they are full of fat that is damaging to your system.

Grilled food is better as the fat is not retained in the food or if it is, very little so it will be much healthier for you. It is not a good idea to cut out carbohydrates altogether as they are the fuel your body needs to keep going. A weight loss diet like this will enable someone to lose about a pound a day as they will be on anywhere between one thousand to fifteen hundred calories a day, but once they start eating more the weight will go back on again.

Fat Burning In A Nutshell

by Ricardo Daryans

At this time of year, we can use every last tip to help avoid holiday weight gain. So here are 5 fat loss tips for beginner & advanced readers.

1) Don’t drink liquid calories.

Please, no juices, sodas or sports drinks. Liquid sugar is your worst enemy when you are trying to lose fat.

Limit your alcohol intake (and don’t mix drinks, that is a double calorie bomb!).

2) Fast food…never again

Eating at fast foods restaurants means nothing but one thing: fat. You will not find healthy food at a fast food restaurant.

Fast, cheap, poor quality food ingredients is what you will find there. Accept it, it’s cheap food, it’s fast food, it’s bad food.

The politically-incorrect truth is that it’s going to take time and effort to eat properly. You will have to plan, shop, and prepare healthy meals. You will have to spend time cleaning, cutting, and cooking your food. That’s the truth.

Ok, i told you so, it will not be easy. But you’ll feel the difference. Instead of the desire to have an afternoon nap at your desk you’ll feel alert, full of energy. That food will be better, taste better, and…it will be healthier than any fast food you can buy in a fast food restaurant.

Make one small improvement to your nutrition everyday for the rest of your life.

3) Eat more vegetables and fruits.

Intead of eating 2 servings per day, go up to 4 servings per day by the end of the week. Even if you think you are doing great by having 5 servings per day, you still need to double that (take 2-3 weeks to work your way up to 10 servings per day).

Stick with fiber-rich fruits and vegetables - organic if possible.

Most nuts are roasted in oils (possible source of trans fats), so stick to natural or dry-roasted nuts.

Don’t worry…this small amount of nuts won’t make you fat, but will fill you up and help you lose weight.

5) Exercise.

Make sure the workouts are efficient and effective. If you want to make it easy for you to follow, stick with the Turbulence Training fat burning workout system.

It doesn’t matter if you train in the morning before or after breakfast, or at night before or after dinner, or at 1pm on days when the moon is in line with Saturn…don’t worry about the details, just train consistently.

6) BONUS TIP: Sitting around watching the TV and snacking, is not the best thing to do after a big meal. Go for a walk, this will help you control your cholesterol and triglycerides.
